LOCATION, DATE & TIME
- GRADCON'99 will be held at:
St. John's College
University of Manitoba
October 1, 1999 (Friday)
8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
MOTIVATION
- An annual Graduate Student Conference has been developed by the Department
of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba.
There are three main reasons for the conference. Firstly, experience in presenting research results is of increasing importance to graduate students. Secondly, undergraduate students will benefit by being familiar with the research component of our Department. Thirdly, Manitoba industry is often unaware of the research conducted at our University.
OBJECTIVES
- To provide a forum for senior Ph.D. and Master's students to share their research results with peers in the departments and industry;
- To encourage undergraduate students to learn more about research and research presentations, and to encourage qualified students to submit their scholarship applications to NSERC; and
- To strengthen links between the various engineering departments, and also between the university, industry and general public.
PRESENTERS
- Ph.D. and senior M.Sc. students (approximately 110 potential presenters in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering).
AUDIENCE
-
- Professors;
- Graduate students;
- Undergraduate students;
- Industrial representatives (similar to the B.Sc. Theses Day); and
- General public.
CONFERENCE FORMAT
- The conference has been scheduled for October 1, 1999. This date seems to be appropriate as the courses will not be in a full swing yet.
- Concurrent sessions in the morning and afternoon will assure that all the students can present their work. As much as possible, each session will be grouped according to a research area (e.g., Electromagnetics, Signal Processing, Power, Communications and Computing).
- One refreshment break during the morning and afternoon sessions.
- Lunch snacks and refreshments will be provided to the presenters and their advisors.
PRESENTATION FORMAT
- Each student will make an oral presentation of research results obtained within the previous 6 months of his/her study.
- The presentation will take 20 minutes, including up to 5 minutes for questions from the audience.
- Each presentation will be chaired by the presenter's advisor.
- An overhead projector will be provided in each presentation room. Other equipment may be requested separately.
PROCEEDINGS FORMAT
- The conference proceedings will be published by the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and will appear in two forms: (i) electronic, and (ii) paper.
- The electronic version of the Proceedings will be distributed on the Web. This will make the extended summaries available worldwide.
- A few soft-bound paper copies of the Gradcon'99 Proceedings will also be produced for the Departmental and Faculty libraries, sponsors, and other institutions.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
- Each presenter will submit an abstract (one page in length) to be included in the Proceedings.
- The abstract must be submitted electronically to the Conference Chair in the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) (as specified in the Instruction for Authors).
- The copyright will be retained by the author of the summary and his/her collaborators.
- Each summary must be accompanied by a Biographical Information Sheet for introduction of the presenters, and for inclusion in the program schedule of the conference.
PARKING
- Free parking for industrial attendees is available through Kate Wood.
