LOCATION, DATE & TIME
- GRADCON'98 will be held at:
St. John's College
University of Manitoba
May 15, 1998 (Friday)
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
MOTIVATION
- An annual Graduate Student Conference has been developed by the Department
of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba.
There are three main reasons for the conference:
- Experience in presenting research results is of increasing importance to graduate students.
- Manitoba industry is often unaware of the research conducted at our University.
- The Faculty of Graduate Studies requires annual reports about the graduate students.
OBJECTIVES
-
- To encourage senior Ph.D. students to share their research results with others in the university and industry;
- To provide a record of current research in the form of Proceedings;
- To complete annual reports on graduate students by their advisory committees; and
- To strengthen links between the various engineering departments, and also between the university, industry and general public.
PRESENTERS
- Senior Ph.D. students (approximately 40 potential presenters
in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering).
AUDIENCE
-
- Professors;
- Graduate students;
- Undergraduate students (available on campus at that time);
- Industrial representatives (similar to the B.Sc. Theses Day); and
- General public.
CONFERENCE FORMAT
- The conference will consist of three parts: (i) oral presentation, (ii) a poster presentation, and (iii) an extended summary (maximum four pages) for the Proceedings.
- The conference has been scheduled for May 15, 1998. This date seems to be appropriate as marking of exams should have been completed. It also provides the opportunity to complete all the annual reports in time for the Faculty of Graduate Studies deadline in June.
- Concurrent sessions in the morning will assure that all the students can present their work. Each session will be grouped according to a research area (e.g., Electromagnetics, Power, Communications, Computing).
- There willl be one poster session in the afternoon
- One refreshment break during the morning and afternoon sessions.
- Lunch snacks and refreshments.
ORAL PRESENTATION FORMAT
- Each student will make a 15-minute oral presentation of their research results obtained within the previous six month of study (during the morning sessions).
- Each presentation will be chaired by the presenter's advisor.
- Due to the time limitation, there will be no questions from the audience during the presentation. Any questions can be asked during the Poster Session.
POSTER PRESENTATION FORMAT
- Each student will display a poster on their research, and be available for questions (during the 105-minute afternoon Poster Session). This would provide them with the opportunities to explain the subject in a greater depth.
PROCEEDINGS FORMAT
- Each student will submit an extended summary (from two to four pages in length) to be included in the conference Proceedings.
- The Proceedings will be published by the Department of Electrical & Computer Enigneering, and will appear in two forms: (i) electronic, and (ii) paper.
- The electronic version of the Proceedings will be distributed on the Web. This will make the extended summaries available worldwide.
- A few soft-bound paper copies of the Proceedings will also be produced for the Departmental and Faculty libraries, sponsors, and other institutions.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
- The extended summaries must be submitted electronically to the Conference Chair in the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) (as specified in the Instruction for Authors).
- The copyright will be retained by the author of the summary and his/her collaborators.
- Each summary must be accompanied by a Biographical Information Sheet (attached).
PARKING
- Free parking for industrial attendees is available through Conference Assitant.
